In this autobiographical film adaption of the award winning play, Neil Simon (Eugene) recalls being a young teenage
Jewish boy.  He lives with his working-class family in 1937 Brooklyn; parents, his aunt, two cousins, and his brother,
Stanley, whom he looks up to and admires. He goes through the hardships of puberty, sexual fantasy, and living the life
of a poor boy in a crowded house.

Gene Saks, an old hand at directing Neil Simon's work on film (The Odd Couple, Barefoot in the Park), here takes a stab
at Simon's most autobiographical work, which stars Jonathan Silverman as an aspiring writer living with two families
under one roof in 1937 Brooklyn. Following his old working formula, Saks keeps an eye on the cast's energy and timing
but otherwise stays out of the way and lets Simon's story and dialogue tumble wonderfully from the mouths of good
actors. Cast in the lead in this 1986 film, the young Silverman (later the star of NBC's Single Guy) makes a very good
impression, as does Bob Dishy as his narrator-father.

The Eugene Trilogy refers to three plays written by Neil Simon: the first being Brighton Beach Memoirs, the second is
Biloxi Blues, and the third being Broadway Bound. The trilogy tells the story of Eugene Jerome from his adolescence in
New York City, to his time spent in basic training in Biloxi, Mississippi during the last year of World War II, and
finally to the beginning of his career as an aspiring comedy writer. The trilogy is a semi-autobiographical account of
Simon's own early life and career.



Brighton Beach Memoirs and Biloxi Blues were made into films, while Broadway Bound was adapted as a made-for-TV movie.
On screen the role of Eugene Jerome was played by Jonathan Silverman in Brighton Beach Memoirs, Matthew Broderick
assumed the role in Biloxi Blues (and played Eugene in the Broadway incarnations of both Brighton Beach and Biloxi
Blues), and Corey Parker took the role in Broadway Bound.
